Blues Music in Education

Nat Dove, world renowned Blues singer and pianist, will conduct FREE MUSIC WORKSHOPS #1&2 on July 12 and 13 at the Neal Recreational Center, 600 North Randolph Avenue, Bryan, Texas 77803: Phone (979) 209-5210. The workshops, BLUES MUSIC 101, will be conducted both days from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Dove will also conduct FREE MUSIC WORKSHOP #3 on June 13 at Camp Hero, located at Bowen Elementary School, 3870 Copperfield Dr., Bryan, Tx 77802. Workshop #3 will be conducted from 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. While the workshops are open to the public, youths are especially encouraged to attend.

Dove has lectured and performed worldwide, including being Composer-in Residence at The American Cultural Center in Paris, France. He lived in France for eleven years. Dove also live for seven years in Tokyo, Japan and was professor of African-American music and culture at The Kunitashi Music Academy.

Dove has also presented lectures at: Dominican University, in Chicago, IL, New York University, University of California, Santa Barbaraand many others.

  • History of Blues as an African-American expression of lament, based in the hope and aspiration of a people to survive
  • The mathematical structure of the Blues and the genius of its inventors and practitioners
  • The phenomena of the popularity of Blues as the classical music of the twentieth century

Blues has influenced all music since its inception. It is the worlds most popular art form. Each new generation discovers the Blues and uses it to actuate their being, and many times they are unaware of that influence. This workshop remedies that by teaching the participants to recognize Blues as entertainment, and a learning tool.
